Shaken up, he heads to the water and takes out a boat with the name “Lost Horizon” and begins to sail into the stormy sea. Justine leaves a note to let George know she remembers everything, as George hears the whispers of a male ghost in the house, who it appears has been encouraging his behaviour. Justine awakes from her coma, presumably with a little help from the spirits whose voices are heard, as a vision of Ella and a ghostly Catherine appear. Finding Franny in bed fully clothed and the car packed, George manages to slip Catherine sedatives in a protein shake.Ĭatherine passes out collapsed on the bed, where George violently kills her with an axe, as Catherine’s spirit appears to join that of the past women who had lived in and been killed in that house.Īlibis in place, George eventually reports the death to the police, making himself look innocent. ![]() He heads home and confronts Catherine, who has discovered that George has lied about multiple things and is growing suspicious of him, preparing to take their daughter and escape. George rams her car off the road, landing Justine in a coma. Things start to escalate as Floyd finds out about George’s fake job recommendation and tells him he will have to report it – but before he gets the chance to do so, George confronts him when he is about to go sailing, and kills him.Īnother person who knew about George’s lies is Justine, a colleague of his who had become friends with Catherine. What happens at the end and what does it mean? A seance reveals there is another spirit in the house, however, and that one is not so friendly. The boys who helping around their house had in fact been the Vayle children who used to live there.Įncouraged by Floyd, Catherine believes the spirit in the house is that of Ella, and she is there to help her, not hurt her. She had been smelling petrol in her bedroom for some time, and eventually discovers the house has a grizzly history that could explain it. It later emerges that George faked his recommendation letter to get his job and further down the line, that he also lied about painting a series of pictures hanging in his office.Ĭatherine, meanwhile has hired two local boys to help with housework and later discovers they have a connection with the place. George also begins sleeping with one of his students, and we slowly begin to discover he’s not such a good guy. This painting, featuring a boat sailing with a cross in the sky will become significant later in the movie. He gives George a welcome gift of a book by Swedenborg with an Innes painting on the front called “ The Valley of the Shadow of Death“. He tells him Swedenborg has a “devoted following” in the area, and that they even hold seances. ![]() “ keenly understood that everything in the natural world has a counterpart in the spiritual realm and Inness painted landscapes with this in mind,” Floyd says. We learn from his colleague Floyd (F Murray Abraham)that many people in the town are interested in the work of Swedish theologian and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg and the artist George Inness. While Catherine is stuck at home feeling increasingly isolated, her husband is spending much of his time at college.
